Interview: Mônica Salgado, editorial director of Glamour magazine

She is editorial director of Glamour magazine. Previously, she held the positions of publisher and editor-in-chief at Vogue. She loves fashion – as it should be – and is constantly tuned to the various themes of the feminine universe.

In this exclusive interview, Monica Salgado talks about woman and fashion evolution in recent years and the new behavior of female consumption.

Ornatus Magazine: Do you believe that fashion has evolved with the women or was the women who have evolved with fashion?

Mônica Salgado: Both, surely. Clothing and accessories are the extension of our body and our personality. Therefore, they are an accurate reflection of who we are, our history, our values. If we evolved, what we wear has evolved too.

O.M.: Internet has become a knowledge democratization channel. What has changed in the fashion world with the arrival of new channels and new ways of communicating?

M.S.: Many people discovered the pleasure of dressing, pampering and primping themselves. It is a pleasure that could be hidden deep down in each person, quietly, waiting to come out. The fact that fashion reaches out to people in a multichannel way helps awakening that passion, multiplies the chances of that happening.

O.M.: For being a part of the feminine universe and thinking about it 24 hours a day, what changes in thought and behavior have you observed in women in recent years?

M.S.: There are so many ... We want everything and we want it now. And don´t not say we can’t. We do not just want equal rights and opportunities – we demand! And we will go after what we want. We demand the division of labor at home and in parenting; we divided the household bills, the pressures and responsibilities, with our partners. We know we can be alpha, powerful and successful women, and still be 'little women', without this being seen in a biased manner, without making us smaller.

O.M.: What kind of consumer is this woman we're talking about?

M.S.: She loves new things, loves to enjoy what she sees when she looks to the mirror, but she consumes with a growing awareness. She wants authentic and true brands, which are functional (they meet a clear goal), but also have an ethical history.

O.M.: What do you think of the fight for women's empowerment?

M.S.: It is required. We are all together in this!

O.M.: There is a big issue that always runs through the female universe that is how to reconcile the desire to be a successful professional or a successful entrepreneur and at the same time, being a mother. How do you balance these sides of your life?

M.S.: I live one day at a time. If I start to think about the medium and long term, I’ll go crazy (I am human, after all). I miss some things, gain others, and overall we just go trying, to live with love and balance!
